Body Agnostic

Writer's picture: Erin PowerErin Power

What if you looked in the mirror and felt… nothing?

Imagine:

- your reflection doesn’t make or break your mood.

- your day isn’t ruined by a bathroom scale.

- feeling content in the container you’re walking around in.

- being uninfluenced.

I talk about this idea of body neutrality often because it’s how I live my life. Though hard to articulate or imagine, it’s freaking amazing to feel absolutely no way in particular about my body — except to madly respect what an awesome, elegant feat of engineering it is.

The last time I posted something like this I got some pushback from a person who said “I’m sorry but I don’t think I’m a bad person just because I want to like what I see in the mirror.” Heck no, you aren’t a bad person! And, presumably, your relationship with your reflection is more or less benign, which is hand-to-heart AMAZING.

But for those of us who RUINED and WASTED decades of our lives HATING what we saw in the mirror — literally NEVER loving it — freedom from giving a damn is what we need.

If you want to look in the mirror and love what you see, that is so awesome.

If you want to look in the mirror and not have it spiral you into depression, shame, obsessive behaviour, and/or negative self-talk, that’s something totally different. That takes work, but it can be done. And if you want to do it, I’m the gal to help you.

A post script…

When I’m at the gym lifting weights, my eyes are closed. I’m not looking in the mirror to see what it looks like. I’m “looking” in my mind’s eye to “see” what it feels like.

When I do open my eyes and glimpse my reflection, I sometimes internally remark: “Wow, I’m strong!”

Imagine looking in a mirror and having THAT be the observation that you make?
